Benedict Cumberbatch speaks ‘Doctor Strange’ in opening monologue – Deadline

Benedict Cumberbatch made his second appearance tonight as host of SNLalluding in his opening monologue to his new film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnesswhich hit theaters on Friday.

“I’m very happy to be hosting again Saturday Night Live† It was a very nice, great week. I have to be honest though, because most of the sketch writers this week gave me sketches every day, and most of them were about Doctor StrangeCumberbatch said at the top. “It’s great. I love the guy. I love playing the character. The movie is doing really well, but I to have been in other movies.”

Cumberbatch joked that he went so far as to express this to: SNL‘s Lorne Michaels, with Michaels responding, “Like what?”

“I said, ‘Well, The power of the dog, for example,” and he said, “No one has seen it.” I said, ‘Come on, man. I was nominated for an Oscar for that. I did a good job,'” the host recalls. “I mean, I didn’t win. I was beaten by Will Smith… No, not physically.”

After hinting at the infamous Oscars hit, Cumberbatch turned to discuss his excitement at being able to host SNLmother’s day show. “Of course I want to wish my mother a very happy Mother’s Day,” he said. “She is currently on holiday in Greece and SNL offered to fly her here first class, and she said, “No, I’m on a beach in Greece. Are you crazy?'”

Cumberbatch then told his mother that he loves her, noting that when he was younger, he and his mother had “one of those weird, funny names” they called each other by. “I called her ‘Pookie,'” he said, “and she called me ‘Benedict Cumberbatch.'”

He later joked, “I went to a boarding school outside London – you may have heard of it – called Hogwarts.”

While he was there, his mother would write him “these wonderful letters”, full of beautiful illustrations. “I can’t do that for her here, of course,” Cumberbatch noted, “but I thought I’d use a bit of this monologue to thank her for all she’s done for me.”

When sentimental piano music began to play, Cumberbatch proceeded to address his mother directly. “Hey, mom. It’s me, your son, little Benedict,’ he said. “Thank you for always being there for me.”

Cumberbatch shared that growing up, his mother always had a solution when he had a problem. “For example, when I lost my two front teeth, I was worried about being teased, but you said, ‘It’s okay. Just try to smile without opening your mouth,” he recalls. “It’s great advice, but it also explains why I smile like that in every red carpet photo to this day.”

“Seriously, Mom, thank you,” he said. “You have shown me so much love and support every step of the way. I love you, Pookie.’

Cumberbatch’s wife Sophie, who was in the audience tonight, also got a shout-out tonight. “I’m seriously in constant awe of you. I mean, for starters, you gave birth to our three beautiful boys, and that alone is a minor miracle, as any woman will tell you,” he said. seen is a wizard.’

After explaining that wizards have robes – unlike his Marvel character Doctor Strange, who has a cloak – he said he hopes that when his wife really thinks about it, she will realize that their contributions as parents are equal. “Because if you think being a mother is hard, try this,” he said with a pulse. “Yes, I just opened a portal. You’re welcome.”
