Celebrating National Day of Indigenous Peoples in Charlottetown

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI – The Lone Cry Singers perform a drum song as part of a National Indigenous People’s Day event at Confederation Landing Park in Charlottetown on June 21.

The event was coordinated by Indigenous Council of PEI Junior Peter Paul, an elder of PEI Mi’kmaq, told SaltWire Network that he is proud that Indigenous culture is displayed so prominently in public.

“When I think back to my childhood, we were never allowed to do what we do here,” said Peter Paul.

“That’s why it took me a long time to find myself. Now we are bringing back our culture. Our children are learning about the culture again, speak the language and wear traditional clothes. And an event like this exposes the public to the culture.”
