Heroes of Liberty is releasing a children’s book about radio icon Rush Limbaugh next month, the latest in a series of youth biographies that teach traditional conservative values through the stories of American heroes. The Limbaugh episode is designed to teach kids the importance of free speech and that it’s okay to speak your mind, even if some people don’t agree.

“We started Heroes of Liberty about a year ago, and it was because we saw a gap in the market. We saw that this was a need that was not being met,” Heroes of Liberty editor Bethany Mandel told Fox News Digital .

SEAN HANNITY IS A YEAR SINCE RUSH LIMBAUGH’S DEATH: ‘HE HAD A GIFT NOBODY ELSE HAD’

Mandel and the other folks behind Heroes of Liberty got tired of seeing multiple children’s books about liberals like Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Kamala Harris, and Hillary Clinton when conservative legends like President Ronald Reagan were ignored by the genre.

“So we wanted to fill that need,” she said. “Ideologically, half the country is on one side and the other half of the country is on the other and the need is not being filled on the right.”

Heroes of Liberty has previously published books for ages 7-12 about Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Sowell, Justice Amy Coney Barrett, and John Wayne. Mandel explained that the response has been “incredible” because there is a clear need for books aimed at children with conservative parents.

“There’s been a lot of focus on children’s literature in the past six months. People are starting to realize the state of children’s literature, and they’re starting to realize the ideological conquest that is taking place in libraries and the absolutely inert, age-inappropriate content that is being displayed in many libraries.” And people realize, you know, it’s up to us. We can’t let the kind of society in general dictate the morals of our children and our families, because they don’t share our morals,” Mandel said.

Some books exemplify masculinity, such as the Wayne biography which focuses on a boy who grew up in the “rough wilderness of the West” to become Hollywood’s biggest star, because Heroes of Liberty doesn’t feel like young guys are posting those kinds of things. send nowadays. Other titles, such as Coney Barrett’s biography, focus on traditional family values.

The next book will focus on Limbaugh and the First Amendment, and Mandel realizes that the polarizing conservative is likely to cause some controversy, but Heroes of Liberty believes it’s worth it.

“It’s about freedom of speech, of course. It’s about the First Amendment. But for me, as an editor, the most important thing for me to get into that book, especially in the last two years, kids are afraid to speak their mind. Mandel said, pointing out that American children have suffered from COVID-related school closures that they could not reasonably object to.

“None of that was right, and we teach kids to swallow that instinct that says, speak up, speak your mind, object to things if you find them objectionable,” Mandel continued. “When you talk to child therapists and child psychiatrists, a big part of the mental health problems that kids have is because they swallow anything that could offend someone, whether it’s abusive or not. And so we really wanted the message of this book to be good to express your opinion, it is good to be candid and say what you believe.”

She said children need to learn that sometimes people disagree with their opinions, and the conservative talk radio legend is the perfect role model for what Heroes of Liberty hopes to achieve.

“In the case of Rush Limbaugh, sometimes it’s not said perfectly, but none of us are perfect and none of the heroes we’ve chosen are perfect,” Mandel said. “But the most important thing is that with this book children should hear that they can express their opinion and that their voice has power.”

She said the Limbaugh book, due out in May, teaches kids that even people who stubbornly disagree with successful Americans should listen to them.

“President Obama faced what… [Limbaugh] said because he was so influential in our national discourse. Like it or not, there were millions of people who loved him and millions who didn’t. But his voice mattered,’ said Mandel. ‘One of the goals of children’s literature is: windows and mirrors. And so children need to be able to see through a window into their potential future, and they need to be able to see themselves in the mirror. And that’s why usually about half of our books are actually based on the childhood of the person we’re writing about… we have a lot of really incredible, sort of backstory to the life and childhood of Rush Limbaugh and how he became who he was. used to be.”

The books feature extensive illustrations that educate young people about the lasting impact heroes in each issue have on Americans.

“We used a lot of different illustrators from around the world to illustrate all these books, and we wanted to get a good feel for the person based on the illustrations,” Mandel said. “So the illustrations that we did for the Amy Coney Barrett book are really kind of soft and soft watercolor, because that’s kind of the atmosphere we shot for with Amy Coney Barrett. The Alexander Hamilton, the illustrations on this are incredible “They belong in a museum. And you know, every page is fully, fully illustrated. They’re really beautiful.”

Heroes of Liberty believes that certain snapshots from the lives of public figures are crucial to telling that person’s story, such as Coney Barrett holding up the blank ticket during her confirmation hearing. When it came to Limbaugh, there were two iconic images that Mandel wanted to be captured by illustrators.

“There’s the gold mic where I mean, this is where the magic happened in his studio with the gold mic. That’s Rush Limbaugh,” she said of the illustration that will appear on the cover of the book.

“One of the other most powerful images for me, which, you know, came from much later in life was when he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Honor,” she said. “You can see Melania Trump doing that around his neck, and that was a really, really powerful moment… so we illustrated both moments in that book.”

Limbaugh learned he had stage IV lung cancer in January 2020 and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom from then-President Trump at the State of the Union address days later. He passed away on February 17, 2021, leaving a huge void of his large, booming voice that radiated conservatism like no other in American history.
