Social media conservatives criticized the Biden administration after it was announced that a “disinformation governance council” would be established in the interim 2022 term to combat “disinformation”.

Homeland Security Minister Alejandro Mayorkas testified Wednesday that a Disinformation Governance Board was recently created, days after Tesla CEO Elon Musk bought Twitter, to fight online disinformation and will be led by Undersecretary for Policy Rob Silvers and chief deputy general counsel Jennifer Gaskill.

“The goal is to bring together (DHS) resources to address this threat,” Mayorkas said, adding that the department is targeting the spread of disinformation in minority communities.

Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri called the board a “disgrace” and wrote a letter to Mayorkas asking for answers about how the board will operate.

“Is there anything more dystopian than a Disinformation Governance Board run by the federal government?” Florida Republican congressional candidate Dr. Willie J. Montague, tweeted, later adding that the board is “Orwellian”.

“They just needed a ‘Disinformation Governance Board’… @Elon Musk threatened their control of the story,” Texas Republican Congressman Troy Nehls tweeted.

“The libraries have been planting the seeds for the backup plan over the past few weeks in case the Twitter deal actually happens,” tweeted Republican Congresswoman Lauren Boebert. “Today’s news of a Biden-backed ‘Disinformation Governance Board’ is dystopian. They cannot afford to let the truth be different from what they say.”

Biden’s ‘Disinformation Governance Board’ is a true Ministry of Truth, tweeted Daily Wire reporter Megan Basham. “A conservative movement that doesn’t fight this with everything it has is not worthy of the name. Or the name American.”

Politico reported that Nina Jankowicz, who previously served as a disinformation fellow at the Wilson Center, will lead the board as executive director.

Jankowicz suggested during the 2020 presidential election that Hunter Biden’s laptop, which has been verified by multiple media outlets, was a “Russian influence operation.”

Jankowicz retweeted her response on Wednesday, claiming she was simply tweeting live the presidential debate between Biden and Trump.
