‘Doctor Strange 2’ Starts With $36 Million Previews – Deadline

Disney/Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness earned $36 million from previews starting at 3 p.m. Thursday. That’s the second best preview during the pandemic after Spider-Man: No Way Homewas $50 million in December. Overall, it’s the eighth biggest preview achievement ever, trailing behind Avengers: Infinity Warwas $39 million in 2018.

The Sam Raimi-directed film will debut in 4,534 cinemas, making it the seventh largest opening footprint ever. As is typical with any Marvel film, the question is how frontloaded Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is. Industry expectations are at least $160 million. However you slice it, that’s the biggest opening for Disney during the pandemic, besting Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ($75.3 million), and for exhibitions, it’s a great sign that the summer box office is off to a great start.

Critics aren’t as impressed with this sequel as they were with the first, with 77% certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes compared to 89% fresh on the 2016 edition. Doctor Strange 2 is also significantly lower than the last Marvel movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home, which yielded 93% certified fresh. That said, 2015 Avengers: Age of Ultron seems like a good comp here. That movie was certified 76% fresh by critics, earning $27.6 million in previews (admittedly, which started at 7 p.m.). Those previews represented 33% of Ultronfirst day box office at $84.4 million, which turned into a $191.2 million opening. That’s one possible way Doctor Strange 2 could weave its magic.

Doctor Strange 2 also hit the fourth highest Thursday night preview ever for Imax with $4.2 million in ticket sales from 410 auditoriums.

On Tuesday, Disney had $60 million in presale tickets for doctor strange 2, behind No way homeis $120 million.

abroad Doctor Strange 2 for the first two days stands at $85.7 million, which is 12% behind No way home+172% lead over Doctor Strange and +197% ahead of the batter on a like-for-like basis. Like it Batman, Doctor Strange 2 does not have China and Russia in its offshore bookings.
