Frank & Harri Patisserie is the kind of light and airy operation you would expect from the duo behind Prahran café Fourth Chapter. Sisters Sarah and Jessica Whitfield moved on from there and put all their energies into this place, which opened in 2020 with a greater focus on French viennoiseries, elaborately layered cakes and baked goodies that hinge on Jessica’s background as a skilled pastry chef.
Of course, the brunch menu is bakery-based, with croissants served either plain with house preserves or filled with Canning’s free-range ham, cheese and honey mustard mayo. There are also several egg dishes and a range of toasties that sell out quickly before the end of the day.
This spot is also a vehicle for showing off Jessica’s flair in the cake department, and the signature “Funfetti” — a Victorian sponge layered with Swiss vanilla buttercream, house-made raspberry jam, seasonal berries and encrusted with sprinkles — deserves a Hollywood handshake at the Great British Bakeoff . All cakes can be ordered 72 hours in advance.
Sitting outside on the sun-filled corner with a croissant and coffee (the house blend is toasted by Niccolo from Melbourne) feels quite Parisian. Otherwise, the interior is minimal and spacious – but you’re immediately drawn to the confectionery with salted choc chip cookies, callebaut and rye brownies, and passion fruit melts.
*Frank & Harri will be holding a Mother’s Day Bake Sale on Saturday, May 7 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can bring your own containers to fill with pastries, donuts, cupcakes and more. Takeaway only *
