Approval of the NBHWC program is a rigorous process that identifies health and wellness coach training and education programs that meet NBHWC published standards for preparing skilled and competent health and wellness coaches. Graduates of this program are eligible to take the Health and Wellness Coaching Certifying Examination to become a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC).

The Ginger Training Institute, Headspace Health’s training program designed to train the next generation of behavioral health coaches and clinicians in a fully virtual environment, provides multidisciplinary training, support and mentorship based on inclusion, diversity, belonging, equity, and access . The new NBHWC approval builds on Ginger’s industry-leading standards for its behavioral health coaches, including master’s degree in a psychology-related field, more than two years of relevant experience and 200 hours of supervised training on the Ginger platform.

The newly approved program provides Ginger coaches with an additional comprehensive, 10-month cohort-based curriculum led by a team of Ginger psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists, social workers and NBC-HWC coaches. The program has a behavioral health orientation with an emphasis on delivering culturally responsive and identity-affirming care and is designed to help Ginger’s coaches develop an awareness of both their own identities and that of their clients, as well as their environmental and social realities.

“As the global mental health crisis deepens, behavioral coaching has rapidly gained widespread acceptance and adoption across the healthcare industry, employers, payers and patients,” said Dana Udall, Ph.D., Chief Clinical Officer at Headspace health. † “Receiving this approval from NBHWC is a testament to our deep commitment to providing our members with the highest quality coaching, whenever and wherever they need it. We are excited to deliver this training to our coaches and ultimately open our program to the next generation of providers, whose work is life-changing for so many people around the world.”

Behavioral health coaching takes an active, goal-oriented approach to address a wide variety of subacute mental health issues, ranging from sleep problems to communication difficulties. Ginger’s coaches are trained to identify higher-level care needs and to help members escalate to therapy or psychiatric services when needed. They also support individuals throughout their care journey. Ginger’s team-based approach has been proven to reduce symptoms of anxiety, as published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research (JMIR).

In addition to the Behavioral Health Coaching program, the Ginger Training Institute provides clinical training for therapists through a postgraduate fellowship program, designed for students who have completed both an APA-accredited doctoral program in clinical or counseling psychology and an APA-accredited internship. This program provides an immersive experience that not only enables students to hone their teletherapy skills, but also provides opportunities to develop skills in Ginger’s multidisciplinary, team-based model. Ginger’s postdoctoral fellowship currently offers four specialized tracks, including diversity, equality, inclusion and connectedness; Product; research and evidence; and clinical supervision and program development.
