How to use Google Calendar in dark mode on any device

  • You can enable dark mode in any version of Google Calendar, but it isn’t always built-in.
  • Google Calendar’s mobile apps follow your system theme by default, but the Android app lets you enable dark mode freely.
  • To get the dark mode on the Google Calendar website, you need to use an extension like Night Eye.

Dark mode has been one of the most popular trends of recent years and almost every major app and device now has its own version of it. This includes Google apps like Google Calendar.

How to enable dark mode in Google Calendar on Android

To enable dark mode in the Google Calendar Android app, use a built-in “Theme” menu. This menu allows you to manually enable dark mode or set it to enable dark mode only when the rest of your phone is in dark mode.

1. Open the Google Calendar app and tap the three stacked lines in the top left corner, scroll down and select Settings

2. Tap General at the top of the screen, find and then tap the Theme option.

3. Choose either the Dark or System error options. Dark will enable dark mode permanently, and System error will only turn it on if the rest of your phone is also in dark mode.

How to Enable Dark Mode in Google Calendar on iPhone and iPad

Unlike the Android version, the Google Calendar app for Apple devices does not allow you to manually switch to dark mode. Instead, it always follows the theme of your device.

This means that if you want Google Calendar in dark mode, you need to enable dark mode for your entire iPhone or iPad.

1. Open the Settings app and scroll down to tap Display and brightness

2. Below the Appearance head, select Darkor tap automatically to set a schedule that turns on dark mode on its own.

How to enable dark mode on Google Calendar website

The Google Calendar website does not have any native dark mode. To use the website in dark mode, you need to download a browser extension.

The best extension for this is Night Eye, a free add-on available for every major web browser. It works with thousands of different websites and is great for adding dark modes to sites that don’t have it. It also offers a number of customization options, allowing you to change how Dark Mode actually looks.

The downside is that Night Eye is only free for three months. After that point, you’ll either have to upgrade to Night Eye Pro to continue using it, or switch to Night Eye Lite, which only lets you keep five websites in dark mode at a time.

1. Using your main web browser, go to the Night Eye website and choose the browser you are using. It will take you to the correct download page.

2. Add the extension to your browser.

3. Go to Google Calendar and select nighteye from your list of extensions, which is usually kept in the top right corner of your browser, marked by a puzzle piece.

4. Click Try for free to accept the terms and then refresh the page.
