Boris Johnson Doesn’t Deny He Offered Carrie Symond’s Top Job

The Conservatives lost both by-elections that were fought on Thursday, with Labor winning Wakefield and the Lib Dems winning big in Tiverton and Honiton.

With both results coming in quick succession in the early hours of Friday, Simon Lightwood won for Labor after taking 13,166 votes, compared to 8,241 for Conservative candidate Nadeem Ahmed.

Richard Foord of the Liberal Democrats went on to win in Devon, rejecting a Conservative majority of 24,000.

Mr Foord, the newly elected Liberal Democrat MP for Tiverton and Honiton, described his victory as “absolutely staggering”. Meanwhile, Simon Lightwood has said that “the next Labor government is born in this room tonight” after his win in West Yorkshire.

Following the double loss, Conservative Party chairman Oliver Dowden resigned from office, citing the mid-term election results and saying: “Our supporters are saddened and disappointed by the recent events, and I share their feelings.”
