‘New Neymar’ is the player Manchester United should sign this summer

Expect Manchester United to be linked with Neymar every day now, amid reports that Paris Saint-Germain may be looking to cash in on the Brazilian.

After five years in Paris, L’Equipe reports that PSG could be looking into the sale of Neymar, despite his contract being automatically extended from 1 July until 2027.

Few clubs can afford to buy Neymar, and Manchester United may be financially capable and certainly seen as naive and desperate enough to consider a move. The Mirror claimed United were willing to pay £200million to sign Neymar in 2018, during Ed Woodward’s tenure. The tabloids will no doubt make the link in the short term.

Despite Neymar’s ability and goalscoring record, he is not a player Manchester United should be targeting. He’d be a mega-money risk, earning a staggering £650,000 a week wages at PSG, which wouldn’t fit the profile of the young, hungry stars Erik ten Hag would like to build around.

‘New Neymar’ is the player Manchester United should sign

Ajax winger Antony is the latest player to be dubbed ‘the new Neymar’, with Goal.com attributing the nickname to his ‘speed and fantastic dribbling skills’.

Antony is already a Brazil international teammate of Neymar, and more importantly, he is known to new Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, who signed him for Ajax and made him a two-time Eredivisie champion.

The winger is a crowd pleaser, bringing intensity and entertainment to the team, and unlike Neymar, at 22 he has the youth on his side.

Manchester United have a clear spot in the squad for Antony, on the right wing, while Neymar wouldn’t fit as cohesively.

Antony would become a future star United would develop, in support of Cristiano Ronaldo. Placing Neymar alongside Ronaldo would create as many problems as it solves, with the duo likely costing the duo more than £1million a week in wages.

We have no doubt the Glazers would be tempted by Neymar’s global appeal and ability to sell shirts, but this wouldn’t be a smart football decision. In that sense, given United’s track record, we expect them to show interest.

Erik ten Hag turns out to be a sensible manager, he should abolish that immediately. A move for his former Ajax protégé Antony is a much smarter investment, and one who, according to The Times, is a ‘major target’ for United. Neymar’s possible availability call does not change that.

Neymar’s availability could help United

If PSG really want to sell Neymar and Manchester United cleverly don’t join in, there won’t be many clubs that can or will hire him.

The standout option is that his former club Barcelona are looking to make a splash, although the financial situation would be very difficult.

One way they could partly raise some money is to cash in on a few assets, starting with Frenkie de Jong, who is trying to sign Manchester United. If this means accepting United’s offer a little sooner, that will work to our advantage.
