NPC Physique Champ Eric Dubas Shares the Cardio Boost That Led Him to Success

Eric Dubas just won a string of medals at the NPC Valley of the Sun Championships in Arizona, but the 39-year-old credits an unusual form of cardio for helping him gain an advantage over his fellow competitors. In a post-win chat with M&F’s Chief Content Officer, Zack Zeigler, Dubas says unorthodox activities like painting his house may have given him an edge.

Dubas is a software engineer and entrepreneur who works on real estate projects. He competed in about 10 bodybuilding competitions and for the NPC Valley of the Sun Championships he also had to struggle with the move to Arizona for a job, but his hectic lifestyle never threatened to derail his progress. Instead, he was sure to start his first prep last year. “I started to taper off a bit around the summer,” says Dubas. “I went full out in mid-January, so probably 12 weeks out (from the competition).”

Wings of power

Driven to succeed meant Eric Dubas had to find a way to align his outside duties with his bodybuilding activities. “It’s contagious in itself,” he says of his winning mentality. “You’re really on it.” And when it came to those extracurricular activities surrounding his move, Dubas could make it work to his advantage. “I was painting my house,” he says. “So, it’s being active outside [training]For the first time.”

Dubas had his house painted, and there is no doubt that his hard work of training, diet, and the extra energy expended in painting all helped him present a ripped physique in the day. By the time the house paint had dried, Eric Dubas took 1st place in the Masters 35+, 1st place in the Open Class, and was also named as the overall physique champion. The big man now plans to balance his career while earning his pro card. “I would definitely get started sooner,” says Dubas of the advice he would give to a younger version of himself. “When I was in my twenties, I thought about doing a show. I just never really felt ready. Now I realize you never feel ready, you just have to do it!”
