One of the most reliable communication materials for centuries, paper has traditionally served as a vessel, a container for notes or the base of a work of art. However, an upcoming group exhibition at Heron Arts focuses on the humble medium itself, highlighting 14 contemporary artists expanding its creative potential. paper show features an array of styles, textures, and techniques from Yuko Nishikawa’s and Roberto Benavidez’s whimsical cellphones pinatas after Julia Ibbini’s laser-cut motifs and typographical messages by Judith + Rolfe. The exhibit opens July 9 and is on view at the San Francisco Gallery through August. You may also like this book, which looks at the artists who define the medium.
