How often do we ever actually dress up?
Unless you’re a celebrity getting extra steps in your fitness app parading on red carpets, or your friends are the wedding types and you’re strapped for the bridal party, the chances of getting fabulously dressed are usually few and far between.
You only have to look once at one of Melbourne’s beautiful old ornate theaters to realize that glamorous attire was once a regular part of going out. In honor of those glory days of yore, the Sydney Road Brunswick Association hosts a Vintage Ball.

Taking place on Thursday, May 19, the Vintage Ball offers Melburnians a rare opportunity to take their sartorial faces high and dress to perfection in their vintage finery.
“Think flowing dresses, top hats and tails, big jewels and everything that glitters. Outrageous outfits are a must,” said Troy Stuchbree, manager of the Sydney Road Brunswick Association.
The Vintage Ball, which like everything else had to be postponed several times due to the pandemic, is finally being held again at the Brunswick Ballroom, an iconic venue at 314 Sydney Road Brunswick.
Pearly Shells, a 10-piece swing band, adds to the retro atmosphere of the evening. “They have a huge audience and they’re such a coup, so we’re excited to have them,” said Stuchbree. “We also have a surprise performance in store, which we won’t tell anyone about.”
While the Vintage Ball is meant to be an evening celebrating the creativity of second-hand chic and on-shop opulence, it’s also an invitation for vintage shoppers to return to Sydney Road in the weeks leading up to preparation.
“The Vintage Ball is about really elevating all the vintage shops, op-shops, thrift stores and upcycled occasion shops that we have on Sydney Road Brunswick, to give them a chance to get a lot more patronage and customers coming out of the lockdown and restrictions” , explains Stuchbree.
The Sydney Road Brunswick Association wants the ball to remind locals of the affordable and eclectic vintage offerings that are always available, going beyond fashion and furniture, while also providing an opportunity to show that to all those who love the ball. visit elsewhere.
A complimentary tote bag will be filled with a printed Vintage and Second Hand Guide, a Food and Venue Guide plus other “goodies that will hopefully inspire people who come to the evening, if not local, to actually shop and support Sydney Road Brunswick themselves.” forward,” says Stuchbree.
The ticket price of $30+bf also includes a complimentary drink on arrival, a photo booth keepsake, a lucky door prize and wandering nibbles (with the evening meal menu also available, for those who want to order something a little more substantial and sit down to eat).
The evening will also be accompanied by catwalk parades so you can show off your gear and see what everyone is wearing, with prizes for the winners of the different categories.
“The Vintage Ball is a perfect opportunity for everyone to pull out all the stops and support the op and vintage stores along Sydney Road Brunswick, dress to their heart’s content and feel great in what they’re wearing,” says Stuchbree.
“Come to the ball and have a ball,” he says. “It’s just that – hit a ball, cut the rug, dance the night away, enjoy the roaming nibbles and just have a beautiful evening supporting a local community.”
