A Toronto architect has a rather expressive hobby, which she hopes will brighten people’s days a bit.
During the day, Garbo Zhu works in the architecture industry. At night she works at her bustle, Grumpy Kid Studio.
Grumpy Kid Studio is an online ceramics shop that makes handmade pottery, all made by Zhu himself. What makes her ceramics unique is the small grumpy face that can be found on all creations.
“By adding faces to your everyday mug, [it] just adds something to your day. [It] brightens up your mood a bit,” she explains to blogTO.
Zhu learned to build ceramics by hand in a studio near her home and initially used this technique during the first few months of her bustle.
Grumpy Kid Studio makes a variety of ceramics, including bowls and vases, but mainly focuses on mugs. Their releases of fun, colorful and expressive products often sell out within minutes.
She also finds similarities between the architecture industry and the pottery: each ultimately produces a physical, functional object.
In the future, Zhu Grumpy Kid hopes to expand in Canada, but the big dream is to have a factory where people can tour the space, see how a mug is made and add their own touches to their very own Grumpy Kid. -mug.
