Tips for Working Effectively with a Personal Trainer, Expert Says – Don’t Eat This That

Whether you’re just starting to work out or deciding to hit the gym again with certain goals in mind, it can be a bit overwhelming how and where to start. Some people find that the most helpful path to success is working with a personal trainer, and we’re here to give you effective tips on how to do that. A personal trainer can provide a lot of knowledge on how to achieve your fitness goals, such as making sure your time spent exercising is as useful and efficient as possible. In addition, a trainer teaches you the correct technique, form and use of the equipment. We reached out to Farel Hruska, personal trainer and DEI Alliance Facilitator at Chuze Fitness to get the best tips for working out with a personal trainer, and she’s got some solid advice to share.

Hruska tells Eat this, not that!“While there are several benefits of working with a trainer, the two biggest benefits in my view are expertise and responsibility.” A good, credible trainer will encourage you to be consistent and choose the right exercises that fit your specific lifestyle and ADLs (activities of daily living). They will personalize the best workouts taking into account your starting point, overall goals, progress and endgame. The process will push you to see and feel results.

Hruska points out, “When selecting a trainer, that decision should include a desire to show up for your sessions with them because you like them and what they offer. Your responsibility depends on your sense of success with their continued encouragement.”

When choosing the best personal trainer for you and your fitness goals, consider connectivity and feeling good. Hruska says, “There are so many trainers with different levels of education and a variety of personalities; finding the ones that make you feel safe and encouraged is key. Often, referrals from friends or even the medical community can be helpful as well.”

She advises us the first step in the process to find the right trainer in a suitable location for you. While this may sound like a no-brainer, your level of comfort with where you train and with whom is key. Hruska explains: “You are the customer and your sense of well-being is the most important.”

The next essential step is to be completely honest about your expectations and efforts. Hruska says your goals are everything when it comes to your success, the workouts you perform, feeling comfortable with your approach, your level of commitment with your trainer, and your overall fitness journey with them.

The third and final step is to determine why working with a trainer is what you want to do. Hruska warns: “Again, it may seem obvious, but making sure this is what you want and determining why you want it will keep you motivated and committed. It’s a commitment of time and money, your why should come first in this decision.”

A trainer relationship is one that keeps getting stronger. It’s a constant learning process, starting with an evaluation of your balance and strength abilities. Stay aware of why you wanted a personal trainer in the first place and the goals you hope to achieve.

It is important to communicate with your trainer about the after-effects of the previous session and all relevant details that he should be aware of. Sessions usually start with a brisk warm-up and end with flexibility and stretching. There’s usually a discussion about how each workout is going, how you were feeling, and a recommendation for what you should be doing until your next workout together.

It is essential to remember that a healthy, fit person cannot live on exercise alone. Healthy eating and lifestyle habits all play an integral role in your fitness journey. Make sure you sleep well, stay hydrated, and stay active as often as possible each day. Challenge yourself whenever possible. For example, Hruska suggests increasing your daily H2O consumption. The next week, adopt an extra healthy habit. Hruska says, “Success breeds success; treat yourself with patience, grace and persistence and the rest will gradually fall into place for lasting change.”
