The Old Sibly building.

DRAMATIC CHANGE FOR FORMER SIBLEYS: One of the biggest building refurbishments in downtown Syracuse’s ongoing revival has kicked into high gear. Workers have snatched the 1980s pink facade of the former Sibley’s department store on the corner of South Salina and West Jefferson streets. The work marks the beginning of a transformation of the $37 million building into City Center, a mix of commercial and retail space and apartments. When the work is completed in early 2023, the building will look completely different. (Dennis Nett photo)

Woman convicted of “gruesome” murder of 93-year-old Victoria Afet was lurking in a stairwell of Syracuse’s infamous Skyline Apartments when 93-year-old Connie Tuori returned to her 12th-floor apartment. Afet ran inside to catch the door before it closed and disappeared into the elderly woman’s home, according to security footage on Feb. 26, 2021. What happened next may have been more horrific than previously known. Afet has committed “unspeakable” acts of brutality, County Court Judge Matthew Doran said Thursday, when Afet was convicted of Tuori’s murder.

Joe Cecile’s Moment: Can a Police Insider Muster the Force and Continue Reform? Three years ago, Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh brought in an outsider, Kenton Buckner, to head the Syracuse Police Department. Now, to replace Buckner, he has turned to 61-year-old Joe Cecile. With over three decades as a Syracuse agent and with deep family ties to the department, Cecile is a consummate insider. A police officer. Some observers wonder if that could mean a return to old-fashioned leadership, with less pressure to improve and hold the police accountable for bad behavior. Cecile says no and said he will make it clear early on that he will not go soft on discipline.

How Walt Price, now 91, came up with a crazy idea that became Mountain Goat Run: Forty-four years ago, Walt Price had the bold idea to host a 17-mile run that would encompass four city parks, all atop Syracuse’s hilliest neighborhoods. That casual run, dubbed the “Super Goat,” would evolve into the thankfully scaled-down 10-mile Mountain Goat Run the following year, a race that now routinely draws 3,000 runners and has become a mainstay on the local running calendar. Price, who recently turned 91, plans to walk the start of the 2022 Goat Sunday morning.

Upstate Medical gives nurses another pay raise: Upstate Medical University is giving nurses another pay raise to make themselves more competitive amid the severe national nursing shortage. The pay is a sign of fierce competition between hospitals in Syracuse and across the country for the limited supply of nurses. This is how much more the nurses will earn.
