Virginia closes application portal for COVID rental on Sunday

New Virginia Rent Relief Program applicants have until 11:59 p.m. Sunday to take advantage of the emergency rental assistance funded by the CARES Act.

New Virginia Rent Relief Program applicants have until 11:59 p.m. Sunday to take advantage of the emergency rental assistance funded by the CARES Act.

The Department of Housing and Community Development program provides emergency assistance to low-income and unemployed households. The organization will close the portal due to a combined wave of applicants and limited availability of funding.

“RRP has processed and paid out more than $713 million in 141,330 housing benefits for more than 104,990 unique households across Virginia,” the department said.

The program primarily served people with a median income of less than 30% and black households in Virginia amid inflation and housing problems.

The department says those who need help can use 211 Virginia to find local community partners, agencies and nonprofits. It contained no plans to introduce a similar rental assistance program.

Find out if you are eligible for the program and access the application by visiting the DHCD website.
